Overview

The OneMSU project addressed the fragmented nature of Michigan State University's app ecosystem, which consisted of multiple apps serving different functions. This led to user confusion and a poor overall experience. The proposed solution was to consolidate these disparate apps into a single, unified platform providing all of MSU's digital services in one integrated interface.

Leveraging research-focused methodologies, including information architecture studies and user research, the project aimed to enhance the user experience by creating a more seamless and intuitive way for the MSU community to access information and campus resources. The overarching goals were to improve efficiency, accessibility, and operational streamlining for the university.

Responsiblities

As the Project Manager of the OneMSU Development Team, I was responsible for developing and maintaining a detailed project plan that outlined key milestones, deliverables, and the overall timeline. This involved coordinating with the project team to ensure all tasks were properly sequenced and resourced to keep the initiative on track.

I served as the central point of contact and coordinator for the cross-functional project team, which included Bryjon Trice, Jayden Miller, and Zayd Alghazali. This entailed facilitating regular team meetings, monitoring individual progress, and helping to resolve any interdependencies or conflicts that arose between team members.

Who's the User?

The user category and primary user persona for OneMSU includes all MSU students and faculty members who often find MSU's wide complex app ecosystem annoying to follow. This persona includes MSU students that use the current MSU app ecosystem to find out latest menu information at dining halls, parking information, and or access SafeMSU's key features like SafeRide.

The primary user persona, therefore, embodies the typical student who values simplicity, accessibility, and efficiency in digital tools. They require a solution that streamlines the process of accessing on-campus emergency tools, dining hall information, and other critical, ensuring student essentials that even those with minimal knowledge about campus can easily access.

Research Methodologies

Comparative Analysis: We created and compared a sitemap of the MSUApp and OneMSU app concept.
Qualtrics Survey: 108 respondents, all MSU Students assessed their experiences on the MSUApp, SpotOn, and more.

We decided that creating a site map of the MSU App and OneMSU would help us run a comparative assessment of both products and help us digest survey data.

The Challenge: Restructuring Site Maps

The MSU App Ecosystem is composed of the MSU App, SafeMSU, Munch at MSU, SpotOn, and TransLoc. The tricky part was downloading all of these apps and creating a large sitemap of all of their app site structure. Assessing their complex routes was the first part, the final part was condensing all of this into one consolidated app, known as OneMSU.
